PORTFOLIO AND DIVIDEND UPDATE NOVEMBER 2020

What an incredible run up that happened in  the month of November. Early November began with a market level of around 2500 and ended the month putting on some 350 points to end at 2850! This update was prepared on 29/11. Edited 30/11 end of day, market slumped by 58points. So overall still this month up by close to 300points, or 12% gain in a month.

Imagine a person who predicted a big crash and turned full cash at 2500 level to some others who still have a high cash warchest. They would have missed out on this big run up in prices, and also dividends from some of the counters, if any.

Overall, I stayed the course, as I realised that I am unable to time the market and would fail miserably if I attempt to so do from past experiences. The edit above also proves this point . How can anyone predict the market accurately? Continued my weekly adding of dividend stocks. As the market rose, I switched my focus from banks to other undervalued stocks, as the former became less and less cheap in price.

This month, added more CIMB, Fujikon, Gas Malaysia, United Plantations, Pokfulam, Safety Godown and Wah Ha Realty.

This is becoming a very diversified portfolio with nearly 80 stocks from Sg Hk and My, with actually a very focused approach of increasing the dividends aka cash flow overall. This has two important advantages, one is that it reduces the risks to any one single counter progressively, two, it evens out cash flow over time. Initially, I was pretty happy in receiving dividends monthly. Now as time goes by, weekly also is happening. Of course, focus is not on weekly dividends and working the way to the counters, but rather work the other way round, at what's suitable to add.

And sleep is an important litmus test to whether the investment is suitable or not. If keep on thinking about stocks till insomnia, then something is wrong and needs to be examined.

PORTFOLIO AND DIVIDEND UPDATE OCTOBER 2020

As I write this towards the end of october 2020, market has fallen below 2500. Lots of reds when i open up the screen during the time of writing this.

Counters added this month : P&O, Oriental Holdings, Miramar Hotel and DBS.

I am doing more research on the UK dividend counters before getting some of them. As usual, a good sustainable yield with a past history of being able to raise dividends. I am looking at counters like rdsb, gsk, lgen, national grid etc. As usual, each counter would probably occupy 1% or less. So objective would be to avoid losers, rather than ability to pick winners, that's good enough. ( thanks to kind friends for their gracious non-selfish sharing)

Cash flow is the key in this kind of down market, no cash flow, can forget about buying anything without selling anything.

At the same time, stay healthy is my other objective. No point having lots of money at the end of the day, only to use it to try to cure the poor health suffered attaining that very wealth.

Sleep is very important. I find 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is useful to maintain alertness and calm throughout the day. Sleeping less and using coffee to support the awakeness is much less useful that a good restful sleep. That said, I find exercising adequately and frequently useful. To destress as well as help sleep more deeply.

Cheers!!!

Portfolio and dividend update September 2020

This is my update for the month of September.  This covid crisis has accelerated my overseas investments, namely into the HK and Malaysia markets. Might go into the UK market also, should attractive opportunities present themselves. Diversification and adding of good dividend paying stocks with a solid track record of paying would be the foci here. Absorb volatility in prices, as these are beyond anyone's control, with adequate holding power and use cash flow from dividends to add more dividend stocks to further enhance cash flow.

Dividends coming in frequently is still a delightful experience , with as frequently as twice a day to once in a few weeks.

Cash flow is the key in this kind of down market, no cash flow, can forget about buying anything without selling anything.

Cheers!!!

DIVIDEND AND PORTFOLIO UPDATE AUGUST 2020

So far in my many years of investing, this is the toughest period. Not sure how long more it will last, maybe 1 more year, 2 years. And the economic impact and the time to recover might take longer. The recent SATS results, the management estimated that the recovery might take up to 2024. That's a long time more, 4 years!

Lot of unprecedented events, lots of companies such as HSBC and Malaysian banks etc which never skipped dividends previously, now not paying. And a lot of others are reducing their dividends. Many of these are not lousy companies which are not making money or on the brink of collapse, but are stellar blue chips like the banks, both in singapore and overseas.

And in US, stock markets have recovered to almost the same as precovid levels. Incredible by itself when we see that the covid infection rates are still very high there. And billionaires becoming richer and richer. The richest man in the world now worth us$200B. It sounds tempting to join in the bandwagon. I mean, it wasn't long ago when his wealth was us$100b and it took such short time to double. It could well double again in say less than 5 years. For most of us, it seems so arduous and time consuming to double their money and some people are making billions just like that!

However i recalled the dot com bubble which happened decades ago. I read about it and it made lots of people lose a lot of money. Sure, it made them rich before they lost it all again. The richest man even if he loses 99% of his wealth, is still worth us$2B. Not the same for the man in the street and myself included.

Crisis makes me re read my books again and this story was illuminated as I read along

So is this time really different? I don’t know for sure, but I suspect not so.

I suspect it might also seem “to be different” around the year 2000 also, that’s when Nasdaq was almost 5k.

And market crashed shortly. It took 15yrs to re reach that level again

In other words, those who moved into tech in late 1990s to 2000 and failed to get out of the market most likely saw themselves facing massive paper losses and it took 15yrs to get back at that level again.

Maybe some can manage to get it at 4500 points and get out at 5000. How they know? I don’t know. But I know I can’t for sure.

For me i don’t have much experience with tech stocks and the risks seem high for my circumstance. Maybe it really can make money faster. However, at my age, I think I would forgo quick gains and still focus on what i do best and know best ie dividends and reinvesting them. I think there’s a good chance of dividends returning to previous levels once the companies profit returns and the economy recovers.

Still much the same strategy during covid market downs as during normal times

- doubling or even more during huge market downs

Over the past few months, I am slowly beefing up the number of my dividend counters, to enable to smoother and more consistent cash flow, after realising that, due to covid 1) some counters shift their payment 2) some counters cut their dividends 3) some counters omit their dividends.

Doing this will also mitigate the risks as it is more spread out to counters in Sg as well as overseas.  However, big banks & insurance ie core financial institutions will still have a heavier weightage overall.

Added Chen Hsong holdings and Lung Kee, both of which have 2 decade of dividend paying under their belts. Lots of cash and little debt on both balance sheets will give less discomfort for their smaller caps.

New Bad surprise : GP industries a Super dividend payor has decided not to pay its final dividend.

I have taken this chance of market 2500 to add even more, good blue chips like banks.

I am prepared if market falls, the extra dividends received will be used to add even more.

If market rises after this, at least i have already added. Even if it does to 2800 level, its still not expensive imo.

Remarks:

I have reduced my singtel exposure, as going forward, i am getting less confident how the company is going to increase earnings and hence restore the fallen dividends, and now at 2500, there are ample opportunities to rotate out. 40B big telco ship to increase back to its former 60B cap, thats 50% gain,
and there are lots of hurdles, local as well as overseas to overcome. Its going to to be tough.
60B drop to current 40B is a drop of 33%, but to rise back to 60B its a gain of 50%.

Added more banks-local and overseas, such as bochk, pbb, cimb. Added CLP hk0002

Thought about adding Heinkein and Carlsberg My, as that would over whole of MY brewery, can the country stop drinking beer? But thought of garmen restriction and yoyoing of companies operation permissions, better not.

But might revisit this decision again later on.
