DIVIDEND AND PORTFOLIO UPDATE AUGUST 2020

So far in my many years of investing, this is the toughest period. Not sure how long more it will last, maybe 1 more year, 2 years. And the economic impact and the time to recover might take longer. The recent SATS results, the management estimated that the recovery might take up to 2024. That's a long time more, 4 years!

Lot of unprecedented events, lots of companies such as HSBC and Malaysian banks etc which never skipped dividends previously, now not paying. And a lot of others are reducing their dividends. Many of these are not lousy companies which are not making money or on the brink of collapse, but are stellar blue chips like the banks, both in singapore and overseas.

And in US, stock markets have recovered to almost the same as precovid levels. Incredible by itself when we see that the covid infection rates are still very high there. And billionaires becoming richer and richer. The richest man in the world now worth us$200B. It sounds tempting to join in the bandwagon. I mean, it wasn't long ago when his wealth was us$100b and it took such short time to double. It could well double again in say less than 5 years. For most of us, it seems so arduous and time consuming to double their money and some people are making billions just like that!

However i recalled the dot com bubble which happened decades ago. I read about it and it made lots of people lose a lot of money. Sure, it made them rich before they lost it all again. The richest man even if he loses 99% of his wealth, is still worth us$2B. Not the same for the man in the street and myself included.

Crisis makes me re read my books again and this story was illuminated as I read along

So is this time really different? I don’t know for sure, but I suspect not so.

I suspect it might also seem “to be different” around the year 2000 also, that’s when Nasdaq was almost 5k.

And market crashed shortly. It took 15yrs to re reach that level again

In other words, those who moved into tech in late 1990s to 2000 and failed to get out of the market most likely saw themselves facing massive paper losses and it took 15yrs to get back at that level again.

Maybe some can manage to get it at 4500 points and get out at 5000. How they know? I don’t know. But I know I can’t for sure.

For me i don’t have much experience with tech stocks and the risks seem high for my circumstance. Maybe it really can make money faster. However, at my age, I think I would forgo quick gains and still focus on what i do best and know best ie dividends and reinvesting them. I think there’s a good chance of dividends returning to previous levels once the companies profit returns and the economy recovers.

Added more banks. Added more dividend payors : malaysian breweries and more hk dividend stocks

Still much the same strategy during covid market downs as during normal times

- adding weekly
- doubling or even more during huge market downs

  1. Hi Paul,

From end Mar2000 peak to early Oct2002 bottom, Nasdaq100 index crashed 83%. So, for long-time investors who do not have an edge in timing their exit, it is advisable to avoid hopping onto the tech bandwagon.

There are different ways to make money from the markets. Younger people with smaller capital size will prefer growth stocks, usually technology-related, because it offers a faster way to grow their wealth but comes with higher risk as one can see from what happened to Nasdaq100 between 2000 to 2002.

Dividend investing will be suitable for people with large capital and one advantage is the regular flow of income provides peace of mind. More so than volatile growth, tech stocks.

  2. Thanks Hyom for your comments. Appreciate it.
And I can’t imagine that young person to be waiting for the next 15yrs just to breakeven, as we don’t have dividends to diminish this break even time.
The timing to enter ie window period is not that wide and imo, missing it has greater consequences than able to get the correct timing to enter
And look at Mr Sim of Creative who was one a billionaire on Forbes Sg list when Creative was a stock darling then.
20yrs later, he still far away from his peak net worth.
