how my old friend retired so early in life - true story

recently i met my old school friend, whom i known for the past 3 decades.

i haven't met him for a long time as i have been busy at work and family stuff and somehow lost contact.

we spoke as he needed my advice on something.

when the official business was settled, we started some catching up.

he told me that he retired long ago, maybe in his early thirties, now basically running errands, fetching family around, doing marketing etc. he lives in a nice landed property and drives a nice car.

i did some research. it's true.

his grandfather sowed the seeds, planted the tree long long ago and he's descendents enjoying the shade and fruits. he's receiving dividends upwards of 0.5m per year. in normal circumstances, cannot possibly finish using.

  1. Ang gong gong,

Your old school friend not bad ;)

Normally its 3 generation from shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves.

I don't care how lao Goh feels, but $40K per month is plenty enough!

Now that's what I call a legacy for our children!

    LOL!

    1. yeah, its 3rd generation now. his elder brother taking care of it. and my friend is passively involved.
i am happy that he is involved in his own family and leading a fulfilling live. heard stories about scions doing undesirable
      stuff.
yeah, 50-60kpm more than enough. house and cars fully paid up.
      how to finish using?
just got to make sure one doesn't get too bored.

  5. yes, indeed.
just to side track, u know, long ago, i used to envy pple born with a gold spoon in the mouth. no need to work. everything they want all being provided for and more. so good one.
for me, its the hard way. i studied hard and work hard. today, life is much better than before.
i don't know but i doubt i will have so much drive to study and work so hard if i were the one born with a gold spoon in my mouth.

    1. yeah, to reach that kind of dividend, to start from scratch, one would probably be in his 60's or older already. sickness might have creeped in. sometimes, hard to enjoy all that money compounded

  8. this 'hard work' comes with much sacrifice.
from studying very hard, sleeping less, being first in the school, going to work, working 18hr days...
    quite unimagineable really.

  9. Comfort is the worst enemy to innovation. And comfort breds laziness. That is why Nokia used to be best hand phone company and then fall out of brand cos it becomes to comfortable that it fail to innovate to come out with better hand phone. As what you describe, your friend life is nua "烂" and that becomes his attitude in life cos of the comfortable life that his grandfather gave him
